Contact meeting (c.m.) : Results of the interclub debate in Hove on 27-5-06

President: RC Hove: Bob Mulholland

Debate chaired by: Bob Hinton

President RC Evreux: Xavier Hubert

President RC Pfhm: Andreas Fuhrmann

Rotarians: Gerhard Herber, Burkhard Thost, Ian Collington, Phillips-Filipowicz

All three clubs debated on Saturday for some 70 minutes potential changes concerning future c.ms. Nobody expected the discussion to result in clear-cut decisions. (Rest of the two-hour meeting: Riders for Health / Ian Collington.)

All three clubs are positive about changes. This is for us a very positive result of the discussion giving us (nearly) ample freedom for the next c.m.. At the same time this conveys great responsibilities concerning the future of c.ms, i.e. we have to take into account as much as possible the interests and wishes of our friends from Hove and Evreux.

One of our main reasons for a change was the attempt to motivate our younger Rotarians to participate.

Fortunately nobody inquired about the conditions under which our younger Rotarians would definitively participate. These conditions are not really known to us, they need to be discussed in our club.

Bob Hinton, who chaired the debate, believed our desires for a change to stem from a particular interest of younger Rotarians to participate.

- Both our English and French friends identified language problems as a problem for the c.ms.

- Hove as well as Evreux favour an upgrading of the meetings by a common subject of the c.m., fixed and prepared beforehand by the three clubs.

- Hove as well as Evreux agree to a joint common project. Evreux even proposes this project to last for three years, without burdening the clubs too much financially.

- Hove as well as Evreux speak in favour of a concentration of the official part of the c.m. on two core days, with an optional programme for the day before/after.

- The traditional date of Ascension Day may be given up.

- Hove as well as Evreux believe the common evening in the privacy of the family homes to be one of the highlights of all c.ms.

Concerning the place of the c.m., Hove is prepared for more flexibility, Tad Phillips-Filipowicz proposed Cracow / Poland as a potential place for the next c.m. organized by Hove. Evreux seems to be more hesitant as to the issue of the place.

Evreux proposes to open for another club from the East or the South of Europe. Hove mentions that a lot has already been done in the East through the contacts of Phillips-Filipowicz.

- General agreement as to the finances. If the share (share of the host club- share of the guests) was to be changed, a common agreement must be found and accepted by the clubs before.

Clive Chapple stressed the point that only good reasons and serious deliberations should lead to a change of what has been successful for more than 50 years now. This applied for other changes (place) as well.

So we will seriously examine the opinions expressed by Hove and Evreux and by our club and then consider a further development. We will certainly change but not all!
